IN THIS LESSON
Alright, let’s get something straight right out the gate—most of what you think makes a ‘good’ board or a ‘good’ board member?
It’s probably wrong. Not because you’re not smart, not because you’re not experienced, but because the nonprofit world is packed with hand-me-down myths that waste time, drain energy, and keep boards spinning their wheels.
So before we go any further, I want to hear from you. What myths have you been carrying? What have you been told about what it means to be a ‘good’ board member? What does a ‘strong’ board look like in your head?
Drop those thoughts here. No judgment. No wrong answers. Just bring ‘em to the surface so we can lay ‘em out, look ‘em over, and start cutting through the noise. The only way to build something better is to clear out what’s broken first. Let’s get to it.
Share your myths.
What is the size of a good board? Who should sit on a board? What does a good board member look like? sound like? How does a board communicate? Do boards have to raise money? Are Robert’s Rules of Order the bible of board procedures?
